POSITION PACKS
For your team: the playbook app Pick your position
FOR BACKS, 9 TO 15

They gave you a number. Nobody gave you the job.

You got put at 13 or on the wing when you were a kid, and since then everybody has just assumed you know what it means. So I've written it down, one backline position at a time: what to look at, and what to do when you see it.

Pick your position The short guide is free. The full pack is $7,
or all six positions for $17.

Don't stand straight underneath it. Start a few steps deeper and slightly to one side, so you're coming onto the ball when you jump.

Pick it and you get the short guide for that position, free. It's one page, and it takes about three minutes.

MAYBE THIS IS YOU

You train hard. You still start on the bench.

You work as hard as the player who starts ahead of you, and nobody can really tell you why it's him.
The only feedback you ever get is “work on your game”.
You watch the big matches and your eyes follow the ball, so you never see what your own position is doing.
Nearly everything online is drills, and hardly any of it is about where to stand or when to go.
A lot of the time the gap is in what you're looking at, and that part can be learned.
INSIDE A PACK

You see this. So you do that.

Every pack is the whole job for one position, cut into six parts. Each part has the pictures first, and then the reads, so you can look more than you read. These four are from the fullback pack.

THEIR BALL910111514UPBACKYOU SHADOW THE BALL
The ball is on your left. That winger comes up into the line, the far winger drops and comes infield, and you stay behind the ball.
1
YOU SEE
Their backline is standing flat
SO YOU
A kick is coming. Get your depth early.
2
YOU SEE
You can see their 10's shoulders
SO YOU
They usually point where the kick is going.
3
YOU SEE
Their 9 has his hands on the ball with forwards bound in front of him
SO YOU
It's a box kick. It's your winger's ball and you're underneath him.
4
YOU SEE
There's a turnover and you don't know who's going to kick
SO YOU
Middle of the pitch, deep, and wait. Only pick a side once it's obvious.

EVERYTHING
All six packs and the Solo Player's Guide
The Solo Player's Guide is fifteen short chapters on the part of rugby you can train on your own, from what goes on in your head to reading the game, and each one has a drill you can do alone. All six full packs come with it, the same ones as in the bundle, so you'd have the packs and the chapters for one payment.

The chapters are laid out on the guide's own page, and you pay there.

What a pack won't do
It tells you what the job is and what to look at. The training is still on you, and it won't make you any quicker.
QUESTIONS

Before you pick

Is this for forwards?
Backs only for now, 9 to 15.
What level is it written for?
Club and school players. The pros are in there as players to watch, and the reads are ones you can try in your next match.
Is it a subscription?
No. It's $7 once for your position, and you keep it.
How do I get it?
By email, straight after you pay. The email has your own link to the pack, it opens on your phone, and you don't need an account. If you lose the email, you can have the link sent again.
I play two positions.
Take the free guide for both first. If you end up wanting more than two packs, all six together are $17.
I'm a coach, is this for me?
The packs are written for players, but plenty of it is useful if you coach backs. If you want to draw plays and share them with your squad, that's the playbook app on the main page.
What number do you wear?
Start with the free guide for your position. It takes about three minutes.
