The inside centre job
Most 12s get told to run hard and tackle, and that's about it. This is the short version of the real job, and it takes about three minutes.
THE JOB IN ONE LINE
Take it to the line square, then carry, pass or kick off what you see.
THE SIX PARTS OF THE JOB
These are the six things a coach is watching, whether he tells you or not.
1
Square at the line
Your hips face the posts when you catch it, so the man marking you has to stay on you.
2
The carry
You're the first big collision, and when the move breaks down you're the one who takes it forward and keeps it.
3
The second pair of hands
There are two versions of this job, the carrier and the second playmaker, and your team needs one more than the other.
4
Lines off your 10
You run the short line expecting the ball every time, because that's what holds a defender.
5
Between 10 and 13
You go up level with your 10 and you own the inside, so your 13 is free to make his reads.
6
After the ball's gone
You're the nearest back to most midfield rucks, so the pass is usually the start of your next job.
WHERE MOST CLUB 12S LOSE IT
Catching it going sideways
So the man marking you just slides onto your 13, and the overlap is gone before it existed.
Deciding before the ball arrives
Always crash or always pass, so their defence never has a question to answer.
Watching the pass you just made
You're standing next to the ruck, and a forward has to come across the pitch to secure it.
17
passes for Jordie Barrett at 12 in one Champions Cup quarter-final, next to 15 carries, 5 kicks, 14 tackles and 3 turnovers won, as reported by Planet Rugby. Fewer than a third of what he did was a carry.
COUNT THIS IN YOUR NEXT MATCH
How many times did you catch it with your hips facing the posts, and how many going sideways?
TWO PLAYERS TO WATCH
Jordie Barrett. Watch only his head in the two seconds before he gets the ball, and count how many times it turns.
Bundee Aki. Watch his hips at the moment he catches it, because they're facing the posts.

I've put the Goal Kicking Tracker in with all six too, so you can log your kicks at goal on your phone and see your percentage and points.
IF YOU TRAIN ON YOUR OWN
Deciding whether to carry, pass or kick before the ball gets to you is something I think you can also work on by yourself, and it's what chapters 7 and 8 of my Solo Player's Guide are about. It's fifteen short chapters, each with a drill you can do alone, and all six position packs come with it.
Your pack is on its way to the email you paid with, and it should land in the next few minutes. If you can't find it, look in spam, or have the link sent again from the bottom of the positions page.
