The wing job

Nobody hands a winger the job description. This is the short version, and it takes about three minutes.

THE JOB IN ONE LINE

Be in the right place without the ball, and go and find it when it doesn't come.

THE SIX PARTS OF THE JOB

These are the six things a coach is watching, whether he tells you or not.

Going to find the ball

If it hasn't come to you in ten minutes, you go and get it, and there's more than one way off your wing.

The edge

Hold, jam or drift. You decide early, and then you go all the way with it.

The backfield

Up when the ball is coming to your side and back when it goes away, so your fullback is never covering two corners.

The high ball and the chase

Catching their kick and chasing your own are two different catches, and you need both.

One on ones and finishing

You only get a few of these in a match, so most of it is the two steps before the defender.

Your voice

Your fullback and your 13 are waiting to hear from you, so it's short words, said early.

WHERE MOST CLUB WINGERS LOSE IT

Waiting on the touchline

Standing at the end of the line until the ball comes, which in a lot of matches means it never does.

The half step on the edge

A bit in and a bit out, so you're too far away to hit him and too flat to cover the man outside.

Staying flat when the ball goes away

So the far corner is open for the kick, and your fullback has to cover both sides by himself.

52%

of the touches England's wingers took in the 2023 Six Nations were between the 15-metre lines, according to RugbyPass. They went into the middle to get the ball.

COUNT THIS IN YOUR NEXT MATCH

How many times did you touch the ball, and what was the longest gap between two touches?

TWO PLAYERS TO WATCH

Mack Hansen. Ignore the ball for the first two phases of an attack and watch where he starts and where he ends up.

Tommy Freeman. After a box kick, time the gap between the catch and him arriving.

IF YOU TRAIN ON YOUR OWN

Being in the right place without the ball is something I think you can also work on by yourself, and it's what chapter 11 of my Solo Player's Guide is about. It's fifteen short chapters, each with a drill you can do alone, and all six position packs come with it.
